The order a kitchen has to be done in
Most of what goes wrong in a kitchen remodel is sequencing rather than craftsmanship. Counters cannot be templated until the cabinets are set and level; the backsplash cannot go on until the counters are in; appliances cannot be fitted until the electrical rough-in has passed inspection. A schedule that ignores that order stalls, and a stalled kitchen is a family eating off a card table for an extra month.
- Demolition and haul-off, with the rest of the house protected and dust contained.
- Framing changes, if a wall is moving or a header is going in.
- Rough-in: plumbing and electrical by licensed subcontractors, then inspection where the city requires it.
- Drywall, texture to match the rest of the house, and primer.
- Cabinets set and levelled - the reference everything after this is measured from.
- Counters templated and fabricated, then installed.
- Backsplash, plumbing and electrical trim-out, appliances.
- Flooring, trim, paint, and a walkthrough with a punch list.
Moving plumbing and electrical, and what it costs you in time
Relocating a sink, adding an island with power and water, or moving a range across the room are all normal requests and all of them change the job. In Texas the plumbing and electrical work has to be done by licensed trades - plumbers under the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, electricians under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - and in most DFW cities it has to be permitted and inspected. That is not a delay to work around, it is the part that protects you. We schedule it in and tell you where it sits on the calendar rather than discovering it halfway through.
Cabinets: refacing, painting, or replacing
There are three honest answers to tired cabinets and they suit different kitchens. If the boxes are solid and the layout works, painting or refinishing them is the biggest visible change for the least disruption - and cabinet finishing is a painting job, which is this company's original trade. If the boxes are solid but the doors are dated, refacing keeps the layout and changes the face. If the layout is the problem, or the boxes are particleboard that has swollen at the sink, replacement is the only one that lasts. Eduardo will tell you which of the three your kitchen actually needs when he looks at it.
Why North Texas kitchens crack where they meet the ceiling
If the cabinet run has pulled away from the ceiling, or the same crack keeps reopening above the range, the cause is usually underneath the house rather than in the finish. DFW sits on expansive clay soils that swell in the wet and shrink in drought, and the seasonal movement shows up first at long rigid runs - cabinet crowns, tall tile, door casings. It is worth knowing before you spend money on the room: if the movement is active, we say so, and the fix starts below the slab rather than at the crown moulding.
