Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with the ground under it, and no slab anywhere is going to avoid that. What a good pour does is decide where the crack goes: control joints cut or tooled at the right spacing and depth give the slab a designed place to relieve itself, so it cracks in a straight line at the joint instead of wandering across the middle. Joint spacing is a calculation from the slab thickness, not a guess, and it is one of the quickest ways to tell a considered pour from a fast one.
What goes under the slab
Most flatwork failures here are base failures. The soil under a new patio or walkway has to be cleared of organic material, brought to grade and compacted properly, or the slab settles unevenly as that material breaks down and the clay moves beneath it. Reinforcement - rebar or mesh, positioned in the slab rather than lying on the ground - does not stop cracks forming but holds the two sides together and level when they do, which is the difference between a hairline you ignore and a trip hazard you replace.
Drainage, which is half the job
Flatwork against a house has to fall away from it. Water held against a slab edge or a foundation is what drives the wet-dry cycle that moves clay in the first place, so a patio that slopes back toward the house is actively making the foundation problem worse. Grade, slope and where the downspouts discharge get looked at before anything is formed. It is not a glamorous part of a patio quote and it is the part that decides how the rest of the house ages.
