Flooring is the finish where the substrate decides the outcome. A slab that is out of flat, a wood subfloor that flexes, or a moisture problem that nobody checked will telegraph through any material you put over it - as lipping in tile, hollow spots in laminate, or cupping in hardwood. Slabs, moisture, and why hardwood is a question here
Most homes in the Metroplex are built on a concrete slab, and concrete holds and passes moisture. Solid hardwood does not belong directly on a slab without a proper vapour barrier and an installation method that accounts for it, which is why engineered wood and luxury vinyl are so common here - they are far more tolerant of slab moisture and of the humidity swing between a wet spring and an August drought. A moisture test before the material is ordered costs almost nothing and prevents the most expensive failure in the trade.
Flat, not level
Tile in particular does not care whether a floor is level; it cares whether it is flat. Large-format tile is unforgiving - the bigger the tile, the less it can absorb a dip, and lipping between tiles is the result. So the slab gets checked across its length, low spots get filled and high spots ground down before anything is set. On a wood subfloor the question is deflection instead: a floor that flexes under foot will crack grout however well the tile is set, and the fix is under the floor rather than on top of it.
Transitions, doors and baseboards
The details at the edges are what make a floor look installed rather than laid. Where two materials meet, the transition should be chosen and set deliberately rather than covered with a strip as an afterthought. Doors may need trimming for the new height. Baseboards either come off and go back on, or get a shoe moulding - and which of those is right depends on the existing trim. Expansion gaps at the walls are not optional on any floating floor; a laminate or LVP floor with no room to move will buckle in the first big humidity swing.
