The crack that keeps coming back
If you have filled the same crack twice and it has returned twice, the drywall is not the problem - something is moving. In North Texas that is usually the soil. Expansive clay swells when it is wet and shrinks in drought, the slab follows it, and the movement shows up inside the house at the weakest points in the wall surface.
- Cracks running diagonally from the corner of a door or window frame - the classic signature of frame movement.
- Doors that stick in one season and swing free in another.
- Cracks in exterior brick, particularly stepping along the mortar joints.
- Gaps opening between the wall and the ceiling, or between baseboard and floor.

What we do about it, and what we will not pretend
Drywall repair is cosmetic. If the movement is active, a repair buys you a season or two and then the crack comes back - and we will say so rather than take the job twice. Where the movement has stabilised, or where you are repairing after foundation work has already been done, the repair holds and is worth doing properly. Texture matching, which is most of the skill
Almost every ceiling and wall in the Metroplex is textured, and there are dozens of variants: orange peel at different densities, knockdown at different flattening pressures, and the heavy hand textures that went on through the 1970s and 1980s and were essentially signed by whoever applied them. A flat patch in a textured wall is visible from across the room. Matching it means reading the existing texture, mixing to the right consistency, applying with the same technique, and feathering out far enough that the transition falls where the eye does not look.
Popcorn ceilings
Removing a popcorn ceiling transforms a room and it is a genuinely messy job - the room has to be emptied and sealed, the texture comes off wet, and then the ceiling underneath needs skimming, sanding, priming and finishing before it looks like anything. One thing to settle first: acoustic ceiling texture applied before the early 1980s may contain asbestos. If the house is that age, it should be tested before anyone scrapes it, and if it is positive, that is licensed abatement work rather than a remodeling job.
